FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s common for dog owners to view their dog’s behaviour as a “simple” problem or merely a “training issue”; however, I want to explain why this is not always the case.

To truly address the challenges you and your dog face, we must first understand why the behaviour is happening. This requires gathering information about your dog’s state of mind, lifestyle, diet, and daily routines, among other factors.

Often, behavioral issues occur alongside other behaviors. For example:

  1. Excessive barking may be linked to noise sensitivities, which can sometimes stem from pain.
  2. Reactivity and resource guarding may both be signs of poor impulse control or frustration.
  3. Dogs that counter-surf or eat everything in sight (including non-food items) often struggle with gut-related issues.

It’s also common for people to label dogs as "stubborn," "lazy," or "naughty." These labels are not only unhelpful but inaccurate. Stubborn dogs may simply not understand what is being asked of them, lazy dogs are often in pain, and so-called naughty dogs may be overwhelmed or overstimulated. Instead of relying on labels, let’s focus on understanding your dog and creating an effective, individualised training plan.

I can help with both training issues and behavioural challenges, and I’ll work with you to maximize the time you spend with us. As someone experienced in dog sports, I can also offer sport training options if that interests you!

We offer 121 dog behaviour consults. These sessions can be in-person (around the Falkirk area) or online. We offer a variety of packages or one-off sessions.

We will work with dogs from all backgrounds, to support you and your dog to have a more fulfilled life together.

Please make us aware of any special requirements your dog has prior to the session.

I will review your dog’s clinical history and then organise a first session with you to further discuss the behaviour of your dog. Over the sessions I will link the clinical history and expressed behaviour and write this in a report. You and your vet will receive a copy of this report. Your vet and I will discuss the most appropriate way forward for your dog.

All documents shared with me, and everything we discuss during our sessions, is completely confidential. I will write a report and share this with your vet, but this is with your consent. This report will support your vet in helping your dog overcome any health issues that they have.

I offer free 15 minute discovery calls where we can discuss the current issues and my potential to support you and your dog.

Most insurance companies have a policy for covering behavioural issues. You should check with your insurance provider in the first instance.

Why Choose
Airngath Dogs

Expertise

Strong understanding of canine behaviour, body language, pain recognition, and reinforcement gained through my PGDip in Clinical Animal Behaviour at Edinburgh University. This knowledge is complemented by practical experience in owning and training dogs, both as pets and in sports such as breed showing, obedience and agility. My experience has strengthened my ability to assess and manage canine behaviour in various contexts.

Training Methodology

Airngath Dogs specialise in dog training and behavioural modification using reinforcement-based techniques. These methods focus on reward-based training, incorporating play and motivation to encourage positive behaviours. We work with dogs to help them understand boundaries, develop impulse control, and build a strong, positive relationship with their owners; ultimately, creating a happy and confident dog.

All dogs and their owners are welcome at Airngath Dogs, regardless of background, experience, or behavioural challenges. I offer a non-judgmental and open-minded support network for those who need it most, fostering a safe space for learning and growth. Each Dog As An Individual

Each dog is treated as an individual, considering their personality, breed traits, and health. As an expert in training and behavioural modification, I create personalised plans tailored to each dog and owner. I will encourage you to send videos and stay in touch between sessions, as every dog learns at a different pace. Consistency is key, and staying engaged with the training will help ensure lasting change.
